“Nona” damage goes up to P2.4 billion

   On December 14, 2015, Typhoon Nona (TS Melor) made land fall over Sorsogon and moved towards Burias Island in the province of Masbate. All provinces of the Bicol region were placed under Public Storm Signal No. 3. The estimated damages and losses in all sectors caused by Typhoon Nona in Bicol region rose to more than P2.4 billion, according to the Bicol Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-Committee on Rehabilitation and Recovery (RDRRMC-CRR) during its meeting on January 12 at NEDA Region 5, Legazpi City.

   The education and agriculture sectors were greatly affected by Typhoon Nona. The education sector reported damages of about P1.2 billion in infrastructure and non-infrastructure learning facilities. About P905 million worth of agriculture and livestock were destroyed or lost. The total estimated cost of damage is expected to increase after further assessment and validation of the areas hit by the typhoon.

   The RDRRMC-CRR also discussed the status of rehabilitation and recovery projects funded under the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council for CY 2013 to 2015.
