pict2Capacitating the development planners of the local government units in the region on basic statistics will contribute in attaining the goal of the Bicol Regional Statistical Development Program 2018-2023 to make accessible credible statistics in different levels of disaggregation in the Bicol Region. Dr. Ma. Carolina L. Boyon, Professor III from the Bicol University College of Science Mathematics Department, was the learning service provider to the activity. A total of 49 participants, 31 females and 18 males, from the planning and development offices of four provinces, seven cities, and 20 municipalities and from the NEDA Region 5 completed the training. The largest group is the Province of Masbate covering 29 percent of the total participants.

The training course included descriptive and inferential statistics and its practical applications. The discussions focused on the real-life experiences and scenarios in the municipalities, cities and provinces in the region. During the workshops, the participants were grouped per province and most of the data used were on the community-based monitoring system.

“Statistics help you speak the language of development”, Dr. Boyon said. With this, Engr. Esplana and Dir. Tolentino agreed that the second batch and/or second level of the training on statistics for development planners be conducted in 2019 to capacitate more provincial, city and municipal planning officers in the region.
