NEDA Bicol conducts outreach activity in a poor barangay

In commemoration of the 2017 National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (NWOEP), NEDA Region 5 conducted an outreach activity last October 23 at barangay Mabinit in Legazpi City. Located along the slopes of Mayon Volcano, barangay Mabinit is one of the city’s relatively poor barangays with a population of 1,640. The activity was held at Mabinit Elementary School where about 120 barangay residents converged, led by Barangay Captain Levy S. Nuñez.

In line with the 2017 NWOEP theme “Answering the Call of October 17 to End Poverty: A Path Towards Peaceful and Inclusive Societies, the outreach activity aimed to promote public awareness on the persistence of poverty and the development strategies to end poverty. The outreach activity consisted of a forum for adults on the Ambisyon Natin 2040 and the Bicol Regional Development Plan (RDP) 2017-2022 and a film showing and games for pre-school and elementary children. The RDP presentation for the adults focused on the development strategies to alleviate poverty. The animated movie Trolls, which portrayed that no one must be left behind, was shown to the children. After the film showing, the NEDA personnel led the children in group singing, dancing, and games. Gifts were handed out to both adults and children, which consisted of soaps, pair of shoes, school supplies and snack packs that were donated by Children International (Bicol) Inc., Liberty Commercial Center, and Sharmila Printing Press and Advertising.
