Bicol Committee on Migration and Development conducts training on School-Based Program for Families of Overseas Filipinos

   The Committee on Migration and Development (CMD) of the Bicol Regional Development Council, in partnership with Atikha Overseas Workers and Communities Initiative, Inc. (Atikha) and the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 5, conducted the Training of Trainers on School-Based Program for Families of Overseas Filipinos (OFs) on May 30 to June 2 at NEDA Region 5, Legazpi City. The training aimed to capacitate teachers from cities with significant number of OFs in implementing values formation and capacity-building activities among adult family members and children of OFs. A total of 43 elementary and secondary school teachers from the cities of Naga, Legazpi, Tabaco, Iriga, Sorsogon, and Ligao attended the training.

   Atikha, a non-government organization that provides economic and social services to OFs and their families in the Philippines, developed a school-based program that seeks to address the social costs of migration. The resource persons were Ms. Estrella “Mai” Dizon- Aňonuevo, Ms. Aileen Constantino-Peňas, and Ms. Karissa Mae Bautista of Atikha; Ms. Ofelia Manalo-Del Mundo of Batang Atikha; and Professor Augustus Aňonuevo of the University of the Philippines Los Baňos.

   The training modules were designed to enable the teachers to communicate to the children of OFs how to (a) appreciate the work and realize the difficulties and sacrifices of their parents and relatives abroad; (b) express their thoughts and feelings on their physical separation with their parents; (c) understand the positive and negative effects of migration to them, their families and communities; (d) cite the things that they can do as pay back for their parents’ sacrifices and how they 
can strengthen their families despite the absence of their parents; (e) understand the value of saving and wise use of money, disavow the values of materialism and consumerism, and reject colonial mentality; (f) assess relationships in their families and discuss things that they can do to foster good relations and communication among family members; (g) understand themselves, set goals and aspirations for themselves and their families and 
appreciate the value of education in realizing these dreams; and (h) promote gender sensitivity and practice shared responsibility in the household.

   Considered as second parents of school children, teachers play an active role in making the children of OFs understand why their parents have to work abroad and integrating in the curriculum how children can cope and deal with the situation. The DepEd Region 5 committed to support the trained teachers in cascading and sharing the information with their respective schools division offices in order to maximize the gains and minimize the social costs of migration.
