Luzon crafts ASEAN Economic Community action agenda

The Luzon Regional Development Committee (RDCom) conducted a workshop on the economic integration of the Association of Southeast      Asian Nations (ASEAN) on February 10 and 11 at Fersal Hotel, Puerto Princesa City to prepare action agenda on regional economic development in the context of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

NEDA Deputy Director General Rosemarie Edillon gave a briefing on the AEC and its implications on regional economic development. The game plan for AEC focuses on the 4Cs strategy: (1) enhancing competitiveness; (2) ensuring compliance; (3) strengthening collaboration; and (4) intensifying communication.    The participants from the different parts of Luzon prepared action agenda on five major topics on regional economic development, namely: (1) province-centric development; (2) agricultural productivity and resilience; (3) small and medium enterprise development in the global value chain; (4) tourism; and (5) green energy. Papers on the said topics were prepared and presented by NEDA regional offices to set off the discussion during the workshop.

Dr. Rogelio N. Concepcion, a professorial lecturer from the University of the Philippines – Los Baňos, gave expert opinion on improving agricultural productivity and resilience, particularly on agricultural import substitution and harmonizing climate change adaptation with agriculture economic community. Ms. Myrna C. Bituin, a successful furniture exporter and 2015 Go Negosyo Inspiring Filipina awardee, shared best practices on how local small and medium enterprises can integrate in the global value chain. Ms. Marybeth R. Mencias, a tourism planning consultant from Blue Water Consultancy, discussed responsible and sustainable tourism development in relation to the AEC. Director Marissa P. Cerezo of the Department of Energy – Renewable Energy Management Bureau provided inputs on improving the share of green energy in the energy mix.
