President Benigno Aquino III led the simultaneous flag raising and wreath laying ceremonies at Plaza Quince Martires in NagaCity on June 12. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) identified Plaza Quince Martires as one of ten historical sites in the country for the 116th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence. Naga City Mayor John Bongat welcomed the guests and attendees. Representative Maria Leonor Gerona-Robredo gave the inspirational message.
In his message, President Aquino called for the people’s cooperation in treading the straight path which is the only way to bring about a just and free Philippines. He mentioned the Bicol International Airport in Albay that will stimulate the growth of tourism, trade, and communication in the region, the proposed one-stop Migrants Resource Center in Naga City to provide services to overseas Filipino workers and their families, and the extension of the Philippine National Railways charter.
The NHCP tasked the Bicol Regional Development Council to coordinate the provision of one-stop government services as part of the celebration. These agencies provided services on June 12 and 13 at Plaza Rizal and Plaza Quezon in NagaCity:
1. LTO – driver’s license application and renewal
2. DOLE – jobs fair
3. DOH – free buntis clinics and health education classes
4. DTI – diskwento caravan
5. NFA – rolling store
6. DA – distribution of free seeds/seedlings
The RDC members were requested to attend and send delegates to the celebration.
