The regional economy grew by 7.1 percent in 2012, higher than the country’s 6.8 percent and nearly four times faster than its pace in 2011. All three major production sectors recorded accelerated growths.

Agriculture expanded by 2.9 percent from 0.8 percent in 2011. Industry recovered from a negative 2.6 percent growth in 2011 and grew by 16.1 percent. Growth in this sector was spurred by public and private construction which grew by 25.8 percent from a negative 12.7 percent. Mining and quarrying also surged to 11.8 percent from a negative 4 percent. The services sector grew at a faster rate of 6.1 percent from 3.9 percent.

The news conference on the 2012 report on the regional economy was held on July 25 (Thursday) at Kouzina Seafood Restaurant, Tyche Boutique Hotel in LegazpiCity. NEDA Region 5 Assistant Regional Director Luis G. Banua and NSCB Regional Head Gil R. Arce responded to questions from the media.
